In South Australia a wide range of people are required by law to notify the Department for Child Protection if they suspect on reasonable grounds that a child or young person is, or may be, at risk of harm. These people are referred to as ‘mandated notifiers’ and their responsibilities are defined in the Child and Young People (Safety) Act2017. Ministers of religion and persons who are employees of, or who volunteer in, an organisation formed for religious or spiritual purposes are mandated according to the Act.
Safe Environments training has been developed and is accredited by the Department of Education to assist mandated notifiers to recognise the signs of child abuse, know the appropriate action to take and understand how to support the child and their family. This 7-hour seminar outlines the legislative requirements for paid and voluntary workers in this Diocese to report suspected harm.
These training sessions are only open to paid and voluntary church workers of this Diocese, and not to the general public.
